Earth Rug
Through this rug-cloth,
May clarity come.
Each fibre woven-
Let it be a channel,
Open,
To let Earths grounded knowing
Flow
Rise
And become.
I offer this Earth-rug
As a seat of connection,
To dream on
To rest on
To revere on-
To be an Earthen sanctuary
Through which
Earths dreaming
Can be sung.
Whilst walking through the woods above my home, the woods pictured here, I often come across varied treasures. Quarts stones, moorland bones, mosses, deer, lichen.
It was on my way to these woods that the beautiful, textural cow locks were found- and then spun into wild thread and woven into this Earth-rug. A small amount of dartmoor lichen made its way in, alongside British 'Lonk' wool, raw flax, a linen and wool warp thread, Uk alpaca fleece and regeneratively grazed fleece from fernhill fibre.
This rug feels utterly wild and roaming. It was a beautiful whirlwind to create- I loosely spun fibres and then plyed my thread together to create a bouncy, durable and robust textile to meet the floor for many moons with ease.
The rusty orange/red thread is Dartmoor woollen yarn that I naturally dyed on the moors using Madder root. This red holds the door and grounds the piece into the heart-root of life.
Dimensions (approximate):
Width: 77cm
Length: 108cm
Please note that due to the nature of these raw and feral fibres, this piece is rugged and organically formed. A few fibres May occasionally shed, but this will not affect the structural integrity of the piece. It is simply a reminder of its animacy.
