Welcome to the second Womb Belt of the Immram collection.

These works were created during our three-month pilgrimage through the Northern European Celtic lands. We travelled from southern England in March to northern Spain, then up through Ireland for May, over to Scotland for June and finally out to the Outer Hebrides, returning to Dartmoor in the midst of a very hot and dry July.

These works are the distillation of a deeply moving, challenging and incredible series of weeks. Each one is inspired by the elements, landscapes, beings, weatherscapes and rich history that the Celtic lands revealed.

The collection is very small — I only wove three pieces during that time, each one taking weeks to warp, spin on a hand spindle and weave in the in-between moments.

My intention for these belts is that they connect their wearer to the wild and sacred lands of the Celtic lands. That they offer a tap root into the legacy of spinners and weavers who have been present on these islands for many thousands of years. That they cocoon you in the essential essence of the womb belt and show you its ability to nurture, protect, support and empower.

This is an ancient technology that we need in modern times.

Every thread has been spun and woven somewhere on the wild western edge of Europe, with most of the spinning taking place in northern Spain and Ireland, and the weaving happening mostly in Éire, Ireland and Alba, Scotland.

This collection was quietly gestated in stone circles, by shorelines, in rainy moments in the van, through dreams, visions and a desire to mirror the beauty and mystery that surrounded us during our journey.

A key intention of our time, for me personally, was to connect to the traditions of the weaving arts in the countries we found ourselves in. And so, I got to visit a spinner’s studio in Galicia, an ancient bog oak loom in an Irish man’s weaving room and, indeed, reconnect to the tap root of Harris Tweed in the weavers’ isles of the Outer Hebrides.

And so, naturally, the wise and well ancestors and modern weavers of Spain, Ireland and Scotland found their way into my reflection of the craft. Each womb belt made feels like a collective effort and collaboration between myself and many other seen and unseen beings.
