Bog oak and new oak combine

and opening us to this ancient practice.

Jules has crafted these spindle whorls using 4,000-year-old bog oak, from trees that fell into the damp, peat-rich soils of the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age.

This ancient wood offers a direct branch to the prehistoric inhabitants of the island — from trees that once lived upon the land among our ancestors and wild animals.

After millennia beneath the bog, the wood has turned a deep, almost otherworldly black. Now risen from the earth, it becomes a new tool for practising an ancient art: drawing out a magical thread from the deep past and carrying it into our world today.

Alongside the spindle, you will receive naturally dyed red woollen roving, prepared using madder root and dyed by Rose on Dartmoor, as well as black Welsh Mountain breed wool and a length of linen thread to serve as a leader for your spinning process. All held within a simple drawstring cotton craft bag.

This spindle is suitable for complete beginners as well as seasoned spinners.

The drop spindle is a tool of humble magic, its ways accessible and simple. It draws us into the gift of slow craft, inviting our hands to remember an older rhythm and our minds to settle into the quiet act of making.
